The NHL handed out 23 games worth of suspensions after the brawls that occured during the Islanders and Penguins game Friday night.
Forward Matt Martin of the Islanders was suspended for 4 games for his suckerpunch from behind on the Penguins Max Talbot.
Forward Trevor Gilles of the Islanders was suspended for 9 games for his elbow and subsequent punches to Eric Tangradi who was diagnosed with a concussion.
Forward Eric Godard of the Penguins was automatically suspended for 10 games after jumping off the bench during a brawl when an Islander went after goalie. Brent Johnson.
The three combined players will surreneder a combined $100,000+ in salary and the Islanders as a team were also fined $100,000 dollars.
The NHL announced today that both Niklas Hjalmarsson and James Wisniewski have been suspended for 2 games.
Hjalmarsson was suspended after a hit to the head of Jason Pominville that was deemed to be illegal. Pominville had to be stretchered off the ice and Hjalmarsson was given a 5 minute penalty and a game misconduct.
Wisniewski on the other hand was given a 2 game suspenion for making an obscene (blowjob) gesture at Sean Avery. Of course the incident wasn’t enough to warrent an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the game but it was enough for a 2 game suspension.
Sometimes I wonder about what the NHL is thinking.
I think Avery himself summed it up perfectly when he said “Can you imagine if I did that? They sent me to rehab the last time I did something. It’s crazy.”
Major League Baseball has suspended Los Angeles Dodgers Outfielder Manny Ramirez for 50 game for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Drug policy. The outfielder said his doctor gave him a perscription, not for steriods, but for another medication he thought would be okay. The medication showed up on a drug test and thus Ramirez was suspended. Manny will be eligable to return to the Dodgers on July 3rd pending rainouts.
Basically right after I posted an article about him Donald Brashear was suspended by the NHL for 6 games, 5 for attacking Betts and 1 for his pre-game antic with Colton Orr. Good Riddance. Brashear was a cheap player. Everyone talks about how avery is dirty player, he is an angel compared to Brashear.
Brashear’s suspenion will continue into the 2009-10 season if the Capitals are eliminated tonight or if they get swept next round.
